This week I have focused on making 5 images for Bologna. I wanted to work on the ryokan, in the print room, with a limited colour palette. Even though I did not end up submitting these, I'm quite happy I set myself the challenge of finishing them by the Bologna deadline. This week has been intense but very enjoyable.

I made the line with transfer monoprint and tried different approaches for colour. I found out using transfer monoprint line could be tricky in terms of consistence, I have struggled with getting the same feel with large scenes and more detailed ones. Below : line is transfer monoprint tinted a reddish black (screen on Photoshop), large zones of flat colour are monoprints with stencils, smaller areas are directly applied digitally. I'm not very happy about the sake scene, it was better as a pencil line and digital colour (last image) but it would look very different from the rest. I have tried to keep more white so that textures would look better and to give a bit of variety in the use of flat colour, which I think works fine, it's more the line that I find less expressive, and the light that is much flatter.
