Creative Reactions - Where Science and Art meet
Creative Reactions is an event that is integral to the Pint of Science Festival, where local artists are linked with scientists to showcase research from a new artistic angle.
I took part in the 2024 edition, where I was paired with scientist Hugo Fleming, part of the MRC Cognition and Brain Sciences Unit, where his research explores the brain basis of mental health. I was immediately fascinated by Hugo's field of research and inspired by our conversations.
From this collaboration emerged "Eleven", a hand-printed poster of 11 brain portraits.
While learning about the interaction of the brain and the body, I was inspired by the fact that everyone has their own set of parameters and balance, like a fingerprint.
I chose to handprint one repeated shape to communicate this, the random texture of the ink and the addition of shapes giving to each of these “portraits” their unique characteristics.
These visual characteristics are left to the viewer to interpret as physical, emotional, environmental - depending on the viewer’s own identity.
"Eleven" was introduced during the Pint of Science talk given by Hugo Fleming, where the audience was invited to interpret the visual characteristics of the portrait and find their own profile. It was later exhibited and sold at the Creative Reactions exhibition.
